The island of
Saba is part of the netherland antillies. The language spoken is Dutch and a
local dialec, but english is also spoken by everybody. The Guilder is the offical currency, although
the US dollar is in wide use. Saba is an inactive volcano rising up to 2900 feet, offering good hiking
opportunities, but it has no beaches. The scenery is nothing except spectacular when it comes to
Saba.
The entire island of Saba is surrounded by a marine park. The underwater topography resembles the
above water topography in that pinnacles and deep drop offs dominate. While much of the diving is on
walls, reef and pinnacles, worth a see is the
Eye of the Needle a pinnacle 50 foot in diameter
rising 250feet and has huge array of coral and sponge life on it.
The nutrient rich waters that rise from the depths surrounding Saba in conjunction with the protection
from the marine park means the marine life, corals, sponges and fish life is extremely vibrant. Saba
is one of the last places in the Caribbean where you can still find huge turtles and groupers.
Typical marine life includes turtles, sting rays, nurse sharks, queen angel fish, frog fish, purple tube
sponges, and irredescent vase sponges.
