The Sergeant Major (Abudefduf vaigensis) is a common damselfish species from the family Pomacentridae and is probably the most common species in the genus Abudefduf. Its distribution is throughout the warm tropical waters of Indo-Pacific region where it can be found from East Africa and the Red Sea to southern Japan and the east coast of Australia. Juveniles can be found as far south as Montague Island in New South Wales. There is very little colour variation between adults and juveniles it can be distinguished from other ‘Sergeant’ species by the yellow colouration below the dorsal fin and the bands are generally coloured dark blue on the adults. It can be found living on rocky reefs and estuaries. The Sergeant Major (Abudefduf vaigensis) grows to a maximum length of approximately 15cm.
