The Blackspot Sergeant (Abudefduf sordidus) has a broad distribution and can be found in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. It can be found from east Africa and the Red Sea across to the Hawaiian and Pitcairn Islands, north to the waters of Japan and down to Australian waters. It is found along the east coast of Australia as far south as Wollongong in New South Wales. This species is easily recognised from other ‘Sergeant’ species by the black spot at the base of the tail. It can be found living on rocky reefs and lagoons whilst the juveniles are common in rock pools. It is known to feed on algae, crustaceans and other invertebrates and it is considered to be highly territorial. The Blackspot Sergeant (Abudefduf sordidus) grows to a maximum length of approximately 17cm.
