Reef Stonefish(Synanceia verrucosa)
Reef Stonefish

The Reef Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) is considered to be on the most venomous fish species in the world, if not the most venomous. The dorsal spines have two grooves that store the venom and when injected the sting is extremely painful and can occasionally lead to fatalities. An anti-venom exists which is very effective if it is applied shortly after being stung.

This species can be found in the warm tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific and is known to occur from the Red Sea and East Africa to French Polynesia, north to southern Japan and south to Queensland in Australia. It is considered to be the most widespread stonefish. This species is a master of camouflage and its colouration generally matches its surroundings making it difficult to see. It can be found living on sandy/rubble bottoms and even in tidal rock pools and has the ability to bury into sand. It is a solitary species that is known to feed on other fishes and crustaceans. The Reef Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) grows to a maximum length of approximately 35cm.
