The Barred Thicklip (Hemigymnus fasciatus) is a tropical fish species that belongs to the ‘Wrasses’ family Labridae. It’s distribution includes the waters of the Indo-Pacific region and it is known to occur from the Red Sea down to Mozambique and across the east to Tahiti. This species varies significantly in colour and pattern during it’s life cycle and also between sex as it changes from juveniles to adult. Juveniles are generally all black in colour with yellow bands across the body whilst in adults the body is whitish with five black bars much broader than the pale interspaces and the head is yellowish-green with irregular blue and black-edged pink to orange bands. This species is generally found on coral reefs and reef flats down to depths of at least 20 metres. It is known to feed on crustaceans, molluscs and echinoderms (such as brittle stars). The Barred Thicklip (Hemigymnus fasciatus) grows to a maximum length of approximately 50cm.
