The Red Indian Fish (Pataecus fronto) is a stunning fish to observe as it has a very unusual look and can be very difficult to find. The Red Indianfish can be found living in amongst sponge gardens where it camouflages very well against the sponges. Divers will often swim over this species without even realising its there.
The colour can very in the species from red to a dull brown or orange colour. It obtained its name because of its head that looks like an Indian. It grows to a maximum size of 25cm. It is found in the southern waters of Australia from southern Queensland to eastern Victoria and south west Australia to Exmouth Gulf.
