The Eastern Spiny Gurnard (Lepidotrigla pleuracanthica) can be occasionally found on sandy bottoms in areas adjacent to coastal reefs on the east coast of Australia. Its range extends from southern Queensland to southern New South Wales and probably extends into eastern Victorian waters.
A trait of the Gurnard species is that it can walk along the bottom by means of feelers in front of its pectoral fins. The Eastern Spiny Gurnard has rounded pectoral fins that look like wings which display a bright fluorescent blue around the edge. The species grows to a maximum size of 20 cm.
