The Blotched Hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys aprinus) is a small fish that grown only to about 12 cm in length. This fish can be found throughout Australian waters and can be found on coastal rocky reefs and shallow estuaries. They can also be found inhabiting coral gardens where there hide underneath the coral to escape from any predatory fish.
The species likes to live in sponges and can often be seen in pairs on the same sponge. They are a very skittish fish and can be difficult for divers to photograph as they often move quickly amongst the sponges.
