The Threadfin Butterflyfish (Chaetodon auriga) is a member of the butterflyfishes family Chaetodontidae and can be found in the warm tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific Oceans. It can be found from the Red Sea and east Africa across to the Hawaiian Islands, north to the waters of southern Japan, south to Lord Howe Island in Australia and throughout the Micronesia region. This species can be easily recognised by a prominent black spot at the end of the dorsal fin and black line markings on its side. Adults can be seen with a black line running vertically across its eye and long filament trailing from the rear of the dorsal fin. It can be found foraging around coral reefs and on adjacent sandy bottoms and it is known to feed on polychaetes, sea anemones, coral polyps and algae. It is generally seen in pairs however small groups may also be encountered. The Threadfin Butterflyfish (Chaetodon auriga) grows to a maximum length of approximately 30cm.
