Pinnate Batfish

The Pinnate Batfish (Platax pinnatus) is a tropical batfish species that is also known as the ‘Dusky Batfish’. Its distribution is the warm tropical waters of the western Pacific region from the Ryukyu Islands to Australia. There have been reports of this species from the western Indian Ocean however these recordings are doubtful. The body is coloured silvery grey or brownish with a black bar through the eye and another line through the pectoral fins. Juveniles are almost black in colour with greatly elevated dorsal and anal fins with the body and fins outlined in orange. Adults are generally solitary and it is known to feed on jellyfish and algae. The Pinnate Batfish (Platax pinnatus) grows to a maximum length of approximately 45cm.
