Organ Pipe Coral(Tubipora musica)
Organ Pipe Coral

The Organ Pipe Coral (Tubipora musica) is a tropical coral species that is known to occur in the waters of the Indian Ocean and the central and western areas of the Pacific Ocean. This species is very popular with marine aquarists as it makes an excellent living specimen in tanks and it also used for ornamental purposes. The attractive skeleton of this species is often used by craftspeople to make jewellery and ornaments. This species looks like small flowers underwater with eight feathery tentacles, which are a grey/white or green in colour. It is a filter feeder and feeds on microscopic plankton when it is open. The polyps are usually extended during the day but will retract if disturbed. Organ-pipe coral is listed on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) therefore trade in this species is regulated.
