The Short Spined Seastar (Patiriella brevispina) is a small seastar species that belongs to the Asterinidae family. This species is distributed around the southern waters of Australia from Dongara in Western Australia to Sydney in New South Wales. It is also found in the waters of northern Tasmania. This species can be recognised by its six arms and purple colouration on its surface. This species prefers shallow waters in protected bays and harbours however it can be found on exposed reefs. It is found from 0 to 30 metres and is most common in waters between 1 to 5 metres. This species is known to feed on sea urchins, bryozoans, molluscs, seagrasses and algae and it can be considered a voracious predator. The Short Spined Seastar (Patiriella brevispina) has a maximum arm radius of approximately 7 cm.
