The Firebrick Seastar (Asterodiscides truncates) is a large seastar that belongs to the Asterodiscididae family. This species is found in the temperate waters of Australia from Eucla in Western Australia around the southern coast to the Solitary Islands in northern New South Wales. It is also found in the Kermadec Islands in New Zealand. The Firebrick Seastar is a large brightly coloured species that is easy to recognise. This species can be found in very deep water, up to 800 metres, where it is sometimes trawled up in fishing nets. It can also be found in waters as shallow as 10 metres. It is known to feed on sponges and algae. The commensal shrimp Periclimenes soror can often be found in association with this species. The Firebrick Seastar grows to a maximum arm radius of 20 cm.
