The Black & Brown Seastar (Nepanthia nigrobrunnea) has a very limited distribution in the sub-tropical waters of eastern Australia. This species was first described by Australia’s marine naturalist Neville Coleman who first discovered this species in 1975 on the east coast of Australia. It can be found from the reefs of Moreton Bay in Queensland to the Solitary Islands in New South Wales. It can be found on rocky reefs and shores from depths of 8 to 30 metres. Its five arms and brown/black colouration on the surface can identify this species. It is known to feed on algae, ascidians and sponges. The Black & Brown Seastar (Nepanthia nigrobrunnea) is a small seastar species that grows to a maximum size of approximately 9 cm.
