Juveniles are generally solitary and found in inshore whilst adults are usually found in pairs. This fish is known to feed on soft coral polyps (such as Litophyton viridis and species in the genus Sarcophyton, Nephthia, and Clavularia). The Spot Tail Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ocellicaudus) is known to grow to a maximum length of approximately 15cm.
