Saddled Butterflyfish


The Saddled Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ephippium) belongs to the ‘Butterflyfishes’ family Chaetodontidae and can be found occurring in the warm tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific. Its distribution is from Sri Lanka and the Cocos-Keeling Islands across to the Hawaiian, Marquesan and Tuamoto islands, north to the waters of southern Japan, and down south to the Rowley Shoals and New South Wales in Australia. The overall colour of this fish is yellowish grey with a large black spot bordered below by a thick white band on its back with wavy blue lines on the lower sides. This species can be found on coral reefs and lagoons down to depths of at least 30 metres. Juveniles are generally solitary whilst adults are found in pairs or small groups. This species is known to feed on filamentous algae, small invertebrates, coral polyps and fish eggs. The Saddled Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ephippium) grows to a maximum length of approximately 30cm.
