The Blackvent Damsel (Dischistodus melanotus) is a small tropical damselfish species that is a member of the ‘Pomacentridae’ family. It is known to occur throughout the Western Pacific and its range includes from southern Japan, Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, Philippines, Palau, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The upper part of the head and the posterior dorsal section is coloured black whilst the rest of the body is white in colour. The underside of the head is yellow and adults have a large black patch on the abdomen whilst juveniles have an ocellus over the centre of the dorsal fin base. This species can be found living on coral reefs and in lagoons and is known to feed on benthic algae. The Blackvent Damsel (Dischistodus melanotus) grows to a maximum length of approximately 16cm.
