The Spotted Hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus) is also commonly referred to as the Pixy Hawkfish and is a member of the Hawkfishes family Cirrhitidae. It can be found on the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region and is known to occur from the Red Sea and east Africa to Panama across to Mariana Island in Micronesia and Australia. This species looks very similar to the Blotched / Threadfin Hawkfish Cirrhitichthys aprinus and may also be confused with the Dwarf Hawkfish Cirrhitichthys falco. It lacks the red bars under the eye that is characteristic of the two species mentioned previously. The underbelly of the Spotted Hawkfish is white and the upper body is covered in red-brown spots. It is a solitary species that is found on coral reefs down to depths of 40 metres. The Spotted Hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus) grows to a maximum length of approximately 9cm.
