The Red Breasted Wrasse (Cheilinus fasciatus) is also commonly known as the Banded Maori Wrasse and is a very colourful wrasse species that is distributed throughout the waters of the Indo-western Pacific region. It can be found from the Red Sea to Micronesia and Samoa to south west Japan, New Caledonia and Australia. It is known to occur on the tropical coral reefs of northern Australia from Broome in Western Australia to the central Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. It is easily recognised by the red-orange colouration at the rear of the head and the alternating black and white bars along the body and tail. It is a solitary species found on coral reefs and over rubble bottoms from 3 to 40 metres. The Red Breasted Wrasse (Cheilinus fasciatus) grows to a maximum length of approximately 36cm.
