The Red Bass (Lutjanus bohar) is a very common tropical fish species that is a member of the tropical ‘snappers’ fish family Lutjanidae. This species is a known Cigatoxin carrier and should not be eaten as there is the risk of ciguatera poisoning. It is a common fish species on the tropical reefs of the Indo-Pacific region and can be found from the Red Sea and east Africa to French Polynesia, south west Japan and the warm waters of northern Australia. The body is coloured dark red to brown paling to reddish on sides and belly. The fins are dark red with almost black on the outer edges. The species may be solitary however it is known to form small groups, especially around popular dive sites where fish are fed. It is known to occur from depths of 1 to 150 metres. The Red Bass (Lutjanus bohar) grows to a maximum length of approximately 75cm.
