Blacktail Snapper

The Blacktail Snapper (Lutjanus fulvus) is one of the more colourful tropical snapper species and belongs to the Lutjanidae family. This species is also commonly referred to as the Yellow Margined Seaperch. It has a broad distribution throughout the waters of the Indo-Pacific region and can be found from the Red Sea and east Africa across to French Polynesia, Japan, Norfolk Island and north eastern Australia along the Great Barrier Reef. This species can be recognised by its pale yellow to brown body and its black tail fin. The dorsal and tail fins are edged in white and the pelvic, pectoral and anal fins are coloured yellow. The dorsal fin has red colouration. It is known to feed during night on a variety of benthic crustaceans and fishes such as damselfishes, goatfishes and wrasses. It is known to occur down to depths of at least 75 metres. The Blacktail Snapper (Lutjanus fulvus) grows to a maximum length of approximately 40cm.
