The Red Squat Lobster (Galathea sp) appears to be an undescribed species that has been found occurring along the central New South Wales coast in Australia. Species in the Galatheidae family are generally very small and are rarely seen because of their cryptic nature and size. They can often be found occurring in large aggregations. They have two elongated front clawed legs and the last pair of legs is very small. The colour of this species is red whilst other Galatheidae species maybe brightly coloured with a stripe; especially those species living in symbiosis with crinoids and corals. This species is known to live in the cauliflower soft coral Dendronephthya sp and can also be found occurring in amongst macroalgae. The Red Squat Lobster (Galathea sp) grows to at least 2cm in length.
