Red Lined Goby(Amblygobius rainfordi)
Red Lined Goby

The Red Lined Goby (Amblygobius rainfordi) is also commonly referred to as the ‘The Old Glory’ or ‘Rainfords Goby’. This species has a broad distribution throughout the Western Pacific region and it is known to occur from the Philippines across to Fiji and south to Australia. In Australia it is known to occur from NW Western Australia across to the Great Barrier Reef off Queensland. This goby can be recognised by its five blue-edged orange stripes on the body as well as the five white spots along the base of the dorsal fins. There is also a black spot in the middle of the second dorsal fin and at the base of the tailfin (the caudal peduncle). This species is found on sandy and silty bottoms adjacent to coral reefs from depths of 3 to 20 metres. Similar to other sand dwelling gobies it feeds by taking mouthfuls of sand and sifting it through its gill rakers, capturing small invertebrates and other organic debris. The Red Lined Goby (Amblygobius rainfordi) is known to grow to a maximum length of approximately 6.5cm.
