Giant Mitre


The Giant Mitre (Mitra mitra) is a tropical gastropod species that belongs to the shell family Mitridae. It can be found occurring throughout the Indo-Pacific region and has been recorded from Papua New Guinea, Japan and the waters of Northern Australia (WA, QLD and NT). This species is generally found occurring on sandy bottoms, often in amongst seagrass habitats from the low tide zone down to depths of 20 metres. It can be recognised by its white coloured shell with red markings. It is known to feed on worms. The Giant Mitre (Mitra mitra) grows to at least 8cm in length.
