The Ring-scale Triplefin (Enneapterygius atrogulare) is a small fish species that belongs to the family of fishes known as Triplefins or Threefins. The Tripterygiidae family is characterised by their three dorsal fins and relatively large scales (compared to their body size). The Ring-scale Triplefin is endemic to the waters of south-eastern Australia from southern Queensland down to Sydney in New South Wales. This species varies greatly in colour between males and females. Males have a red/orange coloured body with a black head and the dorsal fin is white whilst the females are a light brown/sandy colour with some dark mottling.
The Ring-scale Triplefin (Enneapterygius atrogulare) is also listed in some publications as Enneapterygius annulatus . The Ring-scale Triplefin grows to a maxim length of approximately 5 cm.
