Black Margined Glossodoris


The Black-margined Glossodoris (Glossodoris atromarginata) is a very common nudibranch species that is found throughout the waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The species has been recorded from the Red Sea, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Phillipines, Tahiti, Africa and Australia. In Australia, it is known to occur in the Northern Territory, Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales.

This species is often confused in appearance with Glossodoris paladentatus and Glossodoris angasi. Glossodoris atromarginata can be recognised by the thin black line along the edge of the ruffled mantle and it’s black gills and rhinophore’s. The species body colour varies from a creamy white colour to a dull brown/dusky colour. This species is often found on inshore coastal reefs and estuaries in water depths from 1 – 30 metres. It is known to feed on siliceous sponges from the families Spongiidae and Irciniidae. The Black-margined Glossodoris (Glossodoris atromarginata) is known to grow to a maximum length of approximately 6cm.
