The Yellow Boxfish (Ostracion cubicus) is a tropical species that can be found throughout the waters of the Indo-Pacific oceans. In Australia, juveniles of the species have been recorded as far south as Perth on the west coast and as far south as Sydney on the east coast. They are a coastal species and can be found on coastal reefs, in estuaries and in amongst sponge gardens. Juveniles can often be found along the NSW coast over summer hiding in amongst reef crevices and around pylons of wharfs.
Juveniles are easily identified by their cube shape and yellow body that is covered with many small black spots. Adults have a dusky yellow coloured boy with blue-grey colouration on the fins with numerous small black spots all over the body. It can be found in shallower water to depths of 40 metres. The Yellow Boxfish (Ostracion cubicus) grows to a maximum length of 45 cm.
