The Thorny-back Cowfish (Lactoria fornasini) is a widespread tropical indo pacific species that is found along the east Australian coast as far south as Sydney. Adults have a yellow/brown coloured body with bright blue fluorescent spots and scribbles all over. The juveniles tend to have smaller spots and some dark blotches on the body. The Thorny-back Cowfish can often be found swimming in sponge gardens in coastal estuaries and bays. It is generally a shy species and will move away from a diver and hide behind sponges when it is approached. It can be found from depths of 5 metres down to 30 metres. The Thorny-back Cowfish grows to about 20cm.
