The Porcelain Crab (Neopetrolisthes maculosus) is a very attractive crab species that is common in many areas but is rarely seen, as they are a shy species. It belongs to the crustacean family Porcellanidae and is a tropical species that is found throughout the western pacific, along the east of Australia as far south as the Solitary Islands. Porcelain crabs are filter feeders and they filter water with their mouthpart appendages. Their body colour is generally cream/brown with distinct red spots/markings on the body. Males will generally grow larger than the females. Neopetrolisthes maculosus can often be found hiding in amongst its host anemone or in amongst living coral. They are a shy species and often will hide in the anemone away from approaching divers. They are generally less than 10cms in width.
