The Eastern Frogfish (Batrachomoeus dubius) belong to the frogfishes family Batrachoididae. In Australia the species is found from central NSW (around the Sydney area) north to southern Queensland waters. During the day this species generally stays hidden in small holes and caves and at night it is much more active as it leaves the security of it’s hole/cave and searches the reef for prey species. It is more likely that divers will encounter this species out in the open during the period of night.
It varies in colour from dark grey to a light brown colour and prefers silty estuarine habitats. It has been observed in depths as shallow as 5 metres and recorded down to 150 metres. The Eastern Frogfish grows to a maximum size of approximately 30cm.
