The Dwarf Lionfish (Dendrochirus brachypterus) is a small fish species that belongs to the scorpionfishes family (Scorpaenidae). It can be found through out the tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans and have been recorded in locations such as the Red Sea, East Africa, Tonga and Australia. In Australia they are found in warmer tropical waters but can be found on the east coast as far south as Sydney. Its main characteristics are the banded pectoral fins and the densely spotted soft rays on the median fins. Its body colour is reddish-brown. It can often be found hiding in amongst the sponges of coastal estuaries and also on coastal reefs. The Dwarf Lionfish grow to a maximum size of 10cm.
