The Wolf Cardinalfish (Cheilodipterus artus) is a tropical fish species belonging to the family of fishes known as ‘Cardinalfishes’ (Apogonidae). It is known to occur in the Indo-Pacific region from east Africa to Tuamotu Island in French Polynesia, north to south west Japan and south to north-eastern Australia. Adults can be recognised by its pale under colour with approximately 8 red-brown stripes and black tail base. The juveniles have a black spot on a yellow tail base and the 8 stripes are more prominent. This species forms small aggregations in amongst coral outcrops of sheltered bays and lagoons from depths of 3 –25 metres. The Wolf Cardinalfish (Cheilodipterus artus) grows to a maximum length of approximately 12cm.
