The Peacock Cod (Cephalopholis argus) is a tropical fish species that belongs to the ‘Cod and Grouper’ fish family Serranidae. This species has a broad distribution in the waters of the Indo-Pacific and is known to occur from South Africa across the east to French Polynesia, north to Ryukyu Island and south to northern Australia and Lord Howe Island. This species looks very similar in appearance to the Blue Spotted Rockcod (Cephalopholis cyanostigma). It is dark brown in colour with 5-6 pale bars towards the rear of the body and it has a large pale area over the chest. The body is also covered in numerous small blue spots. It is considered to be a common species on tropical coral reefs and is found from shallow water down to depths of at least 40 metres. It is known to feed on fish and crustaceans. The Peacock Cod (Cephalopholis argus) grows to a maximum length of approximately 40cm.
