The Moon Wrasse (Thalassoma lunare) is a tropical fish species that belongs to the ‘Wrasses’ family Labridae. This species is also commonly referred to as the ‘Crescent Wrasse’ and is known to occur in the Indo-Pacific region. It is known to occur from the Red Sea and East Africa across to Line Island in the eastern central Pacific Ocean, north to southern Japan and down to south to Australia and northern New Zealand. This species is easily recognised by its blue coloured body and the lavender to green coloured stripes on its head. It has a deep lunate tail with a yellow centre. Juveniles have more of a green coloured body when compared to adults. This species can be found on coastal rocky reefs, coral reefs and within estuaries. It occasionally forms small schools and may be seen solitary. The Moon Wrasse (Thalassoma lunare) grows to a maximum length of approximately 25cm.
