The Sawtail Surgeonfish (Prionurus microlepidotus) is a common fish species along the east coast of Australia from Airlie Beach in the Whitsunday’s Queensland to Sydney in central New South Wales. The Sawtail is a member of the the ‘Surgeonfishes’ family Acanthuridae that has about 50 different species worldwide. This species can be found on coastal rocky reefs and inshore estuaries and it can generally be observed in small schools. Juveniles can be found around jetties and breakwalls and also in amongst seagrass meadows and weedy reefs. The Sawtail is easily recognised by the black spots on the caudal peduncle (base of tailfin) and the body is grey/silver in colour. The Sawtail Surgeonfish (Prionurus microlepidotus) grows to a maximum length of approximately 40cm.
