The Rough Leatherjacket (Scobinichthys granulatus) is the only species in the genus Scobinichthys and belongs to the Leatherjackets family Monacanthidae. It is found in the waters of southern Australia from the water of south Queensland and around the southern part of the continent to Shark Bay in Western Australia. The species can vary in colour from brown, green, grey or white and one of the most recognisable identification features is a large series of squarish blotches along the midline. It has a compressed body and a smallish mouth with a very acute pointed snout. They can be found on coastal reefs down to depths of 30m and in sponge gardens of coastal estuaries.
The Rough Leatherjacket grows to a maximum size of approximately 30 cm.
