The Chinaman Leatherjacket (Nelusetta ayraudi) is found around the southern half of Australia from the waters of south Queensland to the north-west cape in Western Australia. It is not known to occur in Tasmania however it can be found in northern New Zealand. The Chinaman Leatherjacket belongs to the Leatherjackets family Monacanthidae. Juveniles of the species can be recognised by dark bands that run along the body. Adults have few markings and are generally a brownish-sandy or reddish brown in colour. Divers rarely see the adults, as they prefer deep-water reefs down to depths of 360 metres. Juveniles can be found in estuaries and bays where they form small schools. The juveniles are generally very curious and will often come face to face with a diver. They also tend to like looking at their reflection in the camera port! The Chinaman Leatherjacket grows to a maximum size of 70cm.
