The Trumpeter Whiting (Silago maculate) is an abundant species that can be found on silty and sandy bottoms of the bays and estuaries Australia’s east and west coasts. They are a wide spread tropical species in tropical Australia and their distribution extends down the east coast to Narooma in NSW and down the west coast to Mandurah off Western Australia. Juveniles are often found in seagrass meadows and rocky estuaries either individually or in small aggregations. The adults can be found in deeper coastal bays on sandy flats to depths of at least 30 metres. The relative large dark blotches that they have on their body best identify them. They grow to a maximum size of approximately 30cm.
