The Tiger Pipefish (Filicampus tigris) has a very limited distribution and is found in the subtropical waters of eastern and western Australia. It is monotypic genus (only species in the genus) and is endemic to Australian waters. On the east coast its range is from Moreton Bay in Queensland to Sydney in New South Wales and on the west coast it is recorded from Shark Bay to Broome. It is also found in Spencers Gulf in South Australia.
This species is usually found lying on sandy or silty bottoms in amongst sparse aquatic plant life. It prefers the shallow waters of estuaries and coastal bays and is often observed in amongst Posidonia and Zostera seagrass meadows. It grows to a maximum size of 30cm.
