The Saw Tooth Moray (Gymnothorax prionodon) is an inquisitive species that belongs to the Moray eel family Muraenidae. This species is only known to occur in New South Wales – Australia, northern New Zealand and also in the water of Japan. The species can be found on coastal reefs but is also found within estuaries and harbours. Port Stephens in New South Wales is home to several large resident individuals that live within the crevices and caves of the deepwater sponge gardens. This species prefers deeper reefs (25 metres +) however they have been found in shallow water of less than 10 metres deep. They are more active at dusk or during poor light where they can be observed swimming around searching for prey. They grow to a maximum size of approximately 1 metre.
