The Crimson Banded Wrasse (Notolabrus gymnogenis) is common on the rocky reefs and inshore estuaries of New South Wales, Australia. They can be found from the waters off southern Queensland down south to Victoria and they have been recorded at Lord Howe Island. The male and female vary significantly in appearance. The female is best recognised by its white-spotted pattern, its base colour varies from greyish green to brownish orange. The males have a bright red vertical strip at the rear of their body and red colouring on their dorsal and anal fin. They grow to a maximum size of 40cm.
