The Spotfin Lionfish (Pterois antennata) is a venomous fish species that is part of the Scorpionfishes family Scorpaenidae. It is a tropical species that is found in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific region. It has been recorded in Australia from Shark Bay in Western Australia around the northern part of Australia to the Solitary Islands Marine Park in New South Wales. This species looks very similar in appearance to its close relatives the Common Lionfish (Pterois volitans) and the Soldier Lionfish (Pterois miles. This species can be identified by the dark spots on the pectoral fins; these are best noticed when looked at from behind and above. Long white filaments stretch out from the pectoral fins.
This species is found rocky and coral reefs from depths of 5 metres to at least 40 metres. The Spotfin Lionfish is known to feed on other small fishes and crustaceans. The Spotfin Lionfish (Pterois antennata) grows to a maximum length of approximately 20cm.
