Teardrop Butterflyfish(Chaetodon unimaculatus)
Teardrop Butterflyfish


The Teardrop Butterflyfish (Chaetodon unimaculatus) is a tropical fish species that is that is a member of the ‘Butterflyfishes’ family Chaetodontidae. It can be found throughout the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific region and it is known to occur from East Africa to the Hawaiian, Marquesan, and Ducie Islands, north to southern Japan and south to Lord Howe and Rapa islands. It is also known to occur throughout Micronesia. This species is easily recognised by the colour pattern of yellow, white and black and the large black spot in the middle of the body. Juveniles are almost identical to adults in colouration and appearance. They can often be found in small groups on coral reefs and in clear water lagoons. It is known to feed on soft and hard corals and also on polychaetes, small crustaceans, and filamentous algae. The Teardrop Butterflyfish (Chaetodon unimaculatus) grows to a maximum length of approximately 20cm.
