The Southern Fusilier (Paracaesio xanthurus) is a false fuslier species and is actually a member of the tropical snapper fish family Lutjanidae instead of being a member of the fusilier family Caesionidae. This species is known to occur in the waters of the Indo-western Pacific region and can be found from the Red Sea to south west Japan across to Papua New Guinea, Samoa and along the east coast of Australia. This species is often confused with the Robust Fusilier (Caesio cuning, the Blue and Yellow Fusilier (Caesio teres and the Yellowback Fusilier (Caesio xanthonota). It can be recognised by the blue body with yellow stripe on back extending from the forehead to the tail. This species is often found in schools on coral and rocky reefs from depths of 8 to 50 metres. The Southern Fusilier (Paracaesio xanthurus) grows to a maximum length of approximately 40cm.
