The Dusky Morwong (Dactylophora nigricans) is the largest species in the Morwong family (Cheilodactylidae). This species is also commonly referred to as “Strongfish”. This species is only found along the south coast of Australia from Lancelin in Western Australia to Port Phillip Bay in Victoria. It is a cool water species that is elongate in shape when compared to other Australian morwong species. It can be found moving over seagrass beds and on nearby sandy patches. It prefers sheltered coastal estuaries and bays and has been recorded down to depths of 30 metres. Adults have green/grey colouration with variable dark orange/brown spots and blotches. The blotches are more pronounced in the juveniles.
This species is considered to be poor eating and the Dusky Morwong (Dactylophora nigricans) grows to a maximum length of approximately 1.2 metres.
