The Diogenid Hermit Crab (Paguristes frontalis) belongs to the Diogenid Hermit Crab family Diogenidae. Diogenid hermit crabs are distinguished by a left claw that is equal to or larger in size than the right. The Diogenid family includes mostly all the large and colourful hermit crabs. Paguristes frontalis is found in the waters of southern Australia from Wilson’s Promontory in Victoria to Cape Naturaliste in Western Australia. It can be found in shallow waters to a maximum depth of approximately 8 metres and is often in areas that have good seagrass meadows. Paguristes frontalis has a maximum length of approximately 8cm.
