The Anemone Hermit Crab (Dardanus pedunculatus) belongs to the Diogenid Hermit Crab family Diogenidae. Diogenid hermit crabs are distinguished by a left claw that is equal to or larger in size than the right. The Diogenid family includes mostly all the large and colourful hermit crabs. The Anemone Hermit Crab (Dardanus pedunculatus) is a very colourful crab species that is found mainly in the warmer tropical waters of the western Pacific Ocean and is found along the east coast of Australia as far south as Port Stephens in New South Wales. They are found on rocky and coral reefs and also amongst sponge gardens in more temperate waters. The anemone that is found on this hermits crab’s shell is the species Calliactis miriam. The Anemone Hermit Crab (Dardanus pedunculatus) grows to a maximum size of approximately 12cm.
